Teaching Philosophy
I'm passionate about creating experiential learning opportunities.
My philosophy of education is to holistically consider the strengths and interests of each learner and then facilitate a pathway for them to engage in meaningful learning of skills, knowledge and/or behaviour through real-world opportunities that are relatable to them.
Teaching is a 360-degree process which requires planning, programming, research, delivery, discussion and reflection.
It's about creating constructive and challenging processes which facilitate a unique sense of reward and achievement through outcomes.
Teaching should be delivered in numerous ways - through conversation, experiences, practical demonstration, instruction and/or facilitation. Teachers should, amongst many capabilities, model 21st century skills that encourage risks, creativity, relationship, collaboration, perspective and empathy.
Specifically, I'm passionate about facilitating adventurous outdoor opportunities. I believe that the best way to enable authentic transformative learning is when students are encouraged to express their agency outside a position of comfort, within a safety net of support, where the current situation and future differ. The outdoors is the ideal learning environment to do this.
My Journey
Since completing Year 12 ten years ago, I have developed a range of personal and academic experiences which have shaped my interest in teaching. I developed a significant passion for the outdoors and the way in which it can be used to facilitate experiential learning opportunities.
I have witnessed the value of 'learning by doing' opportunities for young people who may not be able to grasp complex understandings in traditional 'indoor classroom' settings, and I have benefited from an education that is delivered with an understanding of someone's strengths and interests to ensure relevance and meaning to them.
I'm confident that I have sufficient communication, literacy, technology and reading skills to enable me to be a valuable teacher, but I see the opportunity as more than that. I have proven myself as someone who can relate with young people, who understands their perspective of life both at school and away from it and I believe in the beauty and value of learning in discovering everyone's life purpose.
In life, we're regularly confronted with two choices: evolve or repeat. For me, evolving is fun, challenging and exciting - it's how I want my life to continually run its course by pursuing new opportunities and change. A significant factor to continually evolving is the ability to learn new concepts, ideas, skills and knowledge.
Learning is core to who I am - it excites me, it empowers me, it provides me with purpose and it allows me to pursue new opportunities.
